Seasons
The ridge changes its mind
Same mountain. Different job. Summer is a crowd and a long evening. Winter is a short, sharp view if the sky opens. November is often a wrench in the motor room.
Summer
July and August fill the town. The cabins fill with them. Book a slot days ahead if you are set on a specific hour. Smoke from somewhere else’s fire can sit in the valley for a week; the summit can be above it or inside it. Check the sky, not the brochure.
Larch week in September is the one time I still go up for myself. The air is thinner of tourists. The light is low. Bring a layer anyway.
Winter
Short days. Ice on the boardwalk. A view that can stop you mid-sentence if a chinook has cleaned the air. It can also be a white room. The cabin is heated. The deck is not. Boots with a real sole, not gym shoes. I have picked people up off that wood in January.
Evening programs
Some nights the operator runs an after-dark program on the summit. Lights, music, a longer stay. I am not the box office. If that is what you want, read their current schedule. It is a different mood than a 9 a.m. photography slot. Dress warmer than you think. Night wind on Sulphur Mountain does not care that you had dinner.
People call the evening run by a product name. I call it night on the ridge. Same stairs. Same ravens, if they have not clocked off.
November
Hardware needs work. The line often goes quiet in November for maintenance. Do not build a trip around a summit ride in that window unless you have confirmed the dates with the operator. Walk the town. Walk the lakes. The mountain will still be there in December.
